About This Day Trip from Cluj-Napoca

This thoughtfully curated day trip from Cluj-Napoca combines botanical splendour, geological wonder and medieval history in a single journey through the quieter, less-visited landscapes of north-western Transylvania. The day begins at the Jibou Botanical Garden (Grădina Botanică Jibou), one of the largest and most diverse botanical gardens in Romania, spread across the grounds of an 18th-century castle estate. With over 5,000 plant species, themed gardens, a rose garden, a Japanese garden and a Victorian greenhouse, it is a magnificent and peaceful place to begin the morning. From Jibou, the route leads to the Dragon's Garden (Grădina Zmeilor) in Surduc, a surreal geological reserve of towering sandstone formations known locally as 'zmei' (dragons). These extraordinary rock pillars, carved by millions of years of erosion, rise dramatically from the hillside and can be explored on a short, easy walking trail — a geological spectacle unlike anything else in Romania. The day concludes at Bologa Fortress (Cetatea Bologa), the 13th-century stronghold of the Teutonic Knights perched above the Crișul Negru valley, with crumbling towers, wildflower-covered battlements and sweeping mountain views.
